First: do not call the number on the pop-up
Many fake virus alerts try to scare you into calling a phone number, paying for support, or giving remote access to your computer. Real security alerts usually do not demand urgent payment through a browser pop-up.
Close the browser safely
If the page will not close normally, use Task Manager on Windows or Force Quit on Mac to close the browser. Reopen the browser without restoring the suspicious page if it asks.
Do not enter passwords or payment information
If you already typed a password, card number, or bank information, pause and get help. The next step may be securing accounts, changing passwords, and checking the device.
When to bring it in
If the pop-up keeps coming back, your browser homepage changed, or someone connected remotely, have the computer checked before using it for banking, email, or shopping.
