Know where your files actually live
Photos and documents may be on the computer, phone, external drive, cloud account, or all of the above. The first step is knowing what needs protection.
Use more than one backup location
A single copy is risky. A good basic plan includes one local backup and one cloud or off-site copy for the most important files.
Check that backups are working
Backup software can stop running, accounts can fill up, and drives can fail. Open the backup location occasionally and confirm recent files are there.
Be careful with external drives
External drives are useful, but they should not be the only place important files exist. They can be dropped, lost, or damaged.
